A maritime security alert has been issued after international reporting centres advised of a ‘suspected hijacking’ of a merchant vessel in position 13 32 N 058 36 E at 1438 local time on 8 February. No further information was available at the time of writing.
Operators are advised to remain highly cautious and alert to suspicious activity in the vicinity of the suspected hijacking. Attempted attacks and suspicious approaches have increased significantly over the past six weeks with attacks occurring in all areas, including significant distances from the east African coast.
On 6 February an attack was recorded approximately 625NM east of the Seychelles, for example. Pirate activity is expected to remain high in the short term, and vessels should employ hardening measures in advance of entering traditional high risk areas.
