The ITF Seafarers’ Trust has this year granted five women scholarships to attend the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Sweden.
The first ever all-women line up of scholarship recipients will attend the university for a 14-month period; the WMU was set up by the International Maritime Organization as a global teaching and research institution.
The students are Franka Fri Foncham from Cameroon and Nurul Rizky Hamzah from Indonesia, who will both be studying shipping and port management; Ofa Qarase from Fiji, who will be undertaking a course in maritime safety and environmental administration; Masrin Vanichwatanaramlouk from Thailand, who will be embarking on studies in maritime law and policy and Alina Prylipko from the Ukraine, who will be studying maritime education and training.
The students will be spending a week in London next May to participate in induction sessions led by the ITF. They are expected to graduate in December 2013.
