Jan Houtved Hansen has been appointed General Manager Marine Boilers of the Harris Pye Group, the global maritime and offshore engineering company. Based at Harris Pye Scandinavia in Denmark, he has overall responsibility for marine auxiliary boiler business throughout Europe.

“We are delighted to welcome Jan to the Harris Pye global team, ” says the group’s Technical Director, Chris David. “His is very much a round peg in a round hole as his entire working life has seen him involved with boilers.

“He began his career in 1986 as a boiler maker with Aalborg Industries, then six years later moved to International Combustion Engineering (ICE) before returning to Aalborg in 1997. In 2004 he was appointed Boilermaker/Senior Supervisor for boiler repairs at Scandinavian Boiler Service and joins us from Wärtsilä Boiler Services where he was Solutions Manager. Not only will he be the principal point of boiler repair liaison for our customers, but will be visiting vessels to oversee boiler repairs whenever possible.”

Jan Houtved Hansen takes up the tale: “I have been working as a boilermaker since 1986 when I started at Aalborg Industries.  There I worked on building new marine boilers and occasionally on power plants. I undertook my first repairs on vessels for Aalborg Industries in 1987. Moving to ICE I worked as a repair Boilermaker/Foreman on vessels, both on voyage and alongside.

“Returning to Aalborg Industries I worked with new-builds, and during this period of employment had several trips on vessels and to power plants (both domestic and throughout Scandinavia) doing boiler repairs both alone and as a Foreman. The travelling and work on vessels outside Denmark made a big impression on me, and I therefore started at the Scandinavian Boiler Service in 2004 primarily as a Boilermaker Foreman on repair jobs on vessels. In 2006 I was promoted to Senior Supervisor where my primary job was to make Inspections onboard to determine the boiler condition on pressure parts, make a full Inspection report to the customer, and where necessary, put forward a tender for its repair.

“This experience enables me to accurately calculate estimates for the time a job will take and how many men will be needed. Naturally, during this time I was in close contact with vessel Superintendents and look forward to a continuing relationship with them.

“At Wärtsilä I had the opportunity to be in charge of the boiler department in Aalborg as Solutions Manager having contact with customers in Scandinavia and handling jobs both on-site and from our office. I still had day-to-day experience of performing boiler inspections on vessels and on industrial sites. My role at Harris Pye enables me to use all my experience to the full.”

Long and distinguished track record Harris Pye’s highly qualified and experienced personnel offer a full and comprehensive world-wide inspection and reporting service for marine and industrial boiler plants, turbines, steam chests, valves etc using state-of-the-art inspection equipment and procedures.

Experts in pressure vessel, boiler and combustion system repairs, upgrades and installations, their Middle East and Singapore production facilities are American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and The National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors ‘S’, ‘U’ and ‘R’ accredited.

Harris Pye has ‘flying squads’ available in every continent to work at short notice and deal with all necessary tasks quickly and effectively. The company is also able to undertake preventative maintenance and ‘remnant life assessment’. This service extends the inspection to the main components of the boiler such as drums and headers and also to the superheated steam pipe work. Remnant Life Assessment is specifically designed for operators of vessels, FPSOs, FSOs and LNG carriers where service is required beyond the plants original design, or has operated outside its defined parameters. .
