DATE: September 24, 2012 COUNTRY: United Kingdom PORT: Lerwick Development of new quay & berth space

Lerwick Port Authority has given the go-ahead for two new projects to further develop the harbour.
It has awarded a contract to a local development company to reclaim land and establish a new 151 metre quay at Holmsgarth, Lerwick. The quay space, expected to be completed in July 2013, will be used to service the proposed new fish market. Although predominately serving the fishing industry, the new quay space will also benefit a wide range of harbour users, including the offshore oil and gas sector.
The contract has also been awarded to the same company to extend berth space at Greenhead Base, Lerwick, which is primarily used by vessels operating in the offshore oil and gas sector. The new berth 8 will offer an extra 75 metres of quay space at Greenhead Base, offering users 9 metres water space and complementing the recently opened berth 7 which has 100 extra metres of quay space.
