On the occasion of Maritime Cyprus 2013, the Annual Meeting of the Steering Committee of INTERMEPA, the International Marine Environment Protection Association, took place under the chairmanship of George Tsavliris, in Limassol, Cyprus on Monday 7 October. Present at the meeting, hosted at CYMEPA House, were representatives of AUSMEPA, CYMEPA, HELMEPA and NAMEPA, the Associations of Australia, Cyprus, Greece and North America, respectively.

Main subjects of the discussions of the Steering Committee were:

1. the participation of member MEPAs in the Global Observatory on Marine Litter set up by HELMEPA and now part of the new IMO concept of Sustainable Maritime Transportation System (SMTS),

2. the organization of Junior sectors in each MEPA to be linked to IMO’s initiatives towards environmental awareness among youth, and

3. the creation of synergy among participating schoolchildren through the implementation of a common action plan of environmental awareness activities.

The meeting was especially stimulating and constructive as it took place on the afternoon of the same day when IMO Secretary-General, Mr. Koji Sekimizu, presented the new concept of SMTS to the 700 participants of the Maritime Cyprus conference. It is hoped that member MEPAs not present at the meeting will also endorse the decisions of INTERMEPA’s Steering Committee so that the momentum created will be ever more strengthened.
