Shades of Blue!

As a designer, stylist and fashion journalist myself, I thought that building up a Fall/Winter 2013/14 ‘mood board’ for all women working and excelling in the shipping industry, the amazing, golden WISTA girls, is a no-brainer; it just requires enormous amounts of blue! When ladies decide to dress up for a maritime event, one of their first choices is at least one shade of blue. Royal, navy, azure, cerulean, cobalt, sky, midnight, Oxford, ultramarine or other, blue, to a large extend, resides in those women’s closet, for a good reason. Blue is elegant, chic, and imposing, but beyond all else implies the charming element of adventure, travel, and escape. Blue is dreamy, optimistic (as opposed to the general notion), and ideal for people with great aspirations and competitive spirit. For women in shipping it is equally safe to black, but far more interesting and versatile.

This season’s catwalks, in the four main capitals of fashion and elsewhere, were filled with blue, being very atmospheric and cinematic, classic and luxurious. And besides monochrome looks which are pretty easy to wear, you will find checks (as in Prada) or even huge psychedelic polka dots (as in House of Holland). But the most whimsical blue looks of the season can be spotted in great fashion Houses. Among my favorites are the asymmetrical Chanel coat which could be called ‘leg-shower’, and the boarding-school type of outfit reinvented preciously by Valentino and featuring an extraordinary white lace collar.

Some of the looks I’m suggesting here can be called off-duty, while others are corporate and eveningwear, especially for the oh-so-frequent cocktails maritime girls are invited to. Among the blue pieces you are encouraged to own this season are: a midi pencil skirt, a one-zipper sheath dress, a pair of high-waist cropped pants, a fine-knit cashmere cardigan or turtleneck, a blazer, and a roomy super warm and comfy coat.

Let me also tell you that you can even dress up in denim, since its newest more refined and luxurious versions are meant to be worn besides weekends, both in the most formal workspaces and in the evening. You can get many ideas live on American Vogue’s Youtube Channel. The so-called ‘Bible of Fashion’ has created a separate section of videos named ‘Jeanius’ and offering great ideas on how to make your favorite pair of jeans look upscale and chic, or how to buy the right denim pieces for a corporate environment.

But blue can also paint your accessories. Blue heels and bags are so much in fashion right now, and you can play with the fabulous textures of their exquisite materials. You will definitely need a spacious, great-quality leather bag, as well as a pair of sophisticated and chic ankle boots. Suede happens to be a popular trend at the moment, but since it is a high-maintenance material, you can also go for a soft leather such lampskin, smooth calfskin, or even patent leather which is zero-worries!

Givenchy, Chanel

On a more extravagant note, some winter collections even featured bright or electric blue head-pieces. The most popping of all, I think were the heads at Givenchy with an intricate 20’s style and those warmed up with fur at Chanel! Unimaginable courage and beauty! As you see, blue can easily take off its conservative ‘cloak’ and become edgy!

Finally, in terms of beauty and especially make-up trends, there were accents of blue color everywhere; from the lashes to the nails. For me those standing out and recommended to you are the electric blue at the YSL Pure Chromatics Wet and Dry Eye Shadow Palette, the Essie After School Boy Blazer nail polish, and the DiorShow Waterproof Mascara in Azure Blue. It’s obvious that blue is right now in a state of world domination, and so are the women in shipping, our beloved WISTAs who are once again ready to stun and shake the world with their style, and their minds!
