Making a DATE with DNV GL: New Support Centre at Piraeus will bring customers direct access to experts
DNV GL, the world’s leading ship classification society and a leading risk and sustainability service provider, briefed the press today on plans to increase customer access to DNV GL experts to at the Posidonia exhibition in Greece.
Nikos Boussounis, DNV GL Maritime Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for the East Mediterranean, Black & Caspian Seas, set out how a new support centre in Piraeus would offer customers a
direct line to technical experts and expanded plan approval services.
Over the last several years, Greek owners have emerged from the global financial crisis in a stronger position than ever before, said Mr Boussounis. The Greek shipping fleet is continuously growing and has taken back its mantle as the
largest ship owning nation. Investment was booming, as Greek owners have invested in both new buildings and young second hand vessels, and as a result the Greek fleet is among the youngest with an average age of only 9.9 years.
To support the industry Mr Boussounis announced that DNV GL would be making a significant commitment to its Greek customers by establishing a new customer support centre in Piraeus, alongside the existing office. “Beginning in 2015
we will have a centre that will offer direct access to technical experts (DATE). Additionally, we will be expanding our
plan approval department so that we can offer the full range of approval works for ships in operation, ” he said.
The new DATE programme will offer customers in Greece access to experts based in Piraeus, with a wide ranging
multi-disciplinary technical base, including: Classification Systematics, hull, machinery, stability, safety, pollution, among
others. “This initiative is a further step toward being able to offer our customers the broadest range of services locally, ”
said Mr Boussounis. “As the world’s largest classification society, the depth of technical expertise that we can offer to
our customers is unmatched and we want to make sure that they can tap into this resource more easily than ever
The DATE programme and expanded approval services join a strong bulker expert team – with two dedicated ship type
experts (STE) offering regulatory, efficiency and technical support on site in Pireaus. Alongside this, a strong training
presence with the DNV GL Academy and a strategic research and innovation team based in Greece reflected DNV GL’s
commitment to continued investment in the region, said Mr Boussounis.
