Global legal practice Norton Rose Fulbright has today announced the appointment of Jonathan Silver as a shipping finance partner in its Hong Kong office.
Jonathan joins from Hong Kong firm, Howse Williams Bowers where he was a partner. Prior to this, he was an of counsel in the Hong Kong office of Norton Rose Fulbright, where he worked for ten years.
Jonathan’s practice is focused on shipping and ship finance, and covers loans, leasing, sale and purchase, building contracts, charterparties, guarantees, joint ventures, pooling and management.
He will work closely with banking and finance partners Davide Barzilai in Hong Kong and Fei Kwok in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Hong Kong shipping dispute resolution and litigation partner Jim James.
The Hong Kong and China shipping team is part of Norton Rose Fulbright’s wider Asia Pacific shipping practice including Adrian Joyce and Jeremy Gibb in Tokyo; Gervais Green, Ben Rose, Robert Driver and Ian Teare in Singapore; and Ernest van Buuren and Hazel Brasington in Australia.
Harry Theochari, Global Head of Transport, Norton Rose Fulbright commented:
“China will almost inevitably become the world’s leading maritime power over the next decade. It is already the world’s largest importer as well as exporter of goods and dominates the economics of the shipping industry. Jonathan’s appointment provides a dedicated shipping resource in Hong Kong and China and ensures we will maintain our market leading position for shipping globally as the industry moves east.
Phillip John, Head of North Asia, Norton Rose Fulbright commented:
“Jonathan will work closely with our Singapore, Tokyo and Australia offices, as well as working extensively in China, one of the world’s most important maritime nations. Jonathan’s appointment demonstrates Norton Rose Fulbright’s commitment to our market-leading shipping practice in China, and across Asia Pacific.”
Jonathan Silver commented:
“China is the world’s largest shipbuilder and it is the stated intention of the Chinese Government that Shanghai will overtake London and New York as the world’s leading maritime centre. We’re seeing an upsurge in joint ventures between Hong Kong ship-owners looking to acquire newbuilds and a rapidly growing leasing market in China. I’m pleased to return to Norton Rose Fulbright to service the rise in demand for legal services from the shipping industry in the region.”
Jonathan is the fourth partner to join Norton Rose Fulbright’s shipping practice in the past 18 months, following the appointment of Hazel Brasington in Melbourne, and Brad Berman and Brian Devine in New York. Norton Rose Fulbright has one of the world’s leading shipping practices, providing advice throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
