Seafarers UK has announced that the charity’s 24 Peaks Challenge will be taking place on the weekend of 11-12 July 2015. Maritime businesses are being invited to participate and the team with the highest fundraising total will be awarded the prestigious 24 Peaks Challenge Trophy.
For 2015 Seafarers UK is inviting 24 teams to lace up their hiking boots and take on the challenge – to climb 24 Lake District peaks, all over 2, 400 feet, in 24 hours. Over 50 miles, the course includes Scafell Pike – the highest mountain in England – and some of the most stunning countryside in Cumbria, including rivers, moorland, farms and forest.
Each team should consist of five walkers plus one non-walker who will act as support crew. All participants will need to be physically fit – but more than that they will need determination, self-belief and team spirit to get them to the finish line. See website http://www.seafarers-uk.org/
This year Teekay Shipping entered three teams. Teekay’s Senior Vice President, Chartering and Freight Trading, James Pippard said: ‘Seafarers UK’s 24 Peaks Challenge is a brilliant event that we love for its sheer craziness, setting off at dawn to climb so many beautiful peaks in the Lake District.’
‘We learned a lot about how we work under extreme pressure and when we finished we were a better team for it. As a shipping company supporting the maritime community is close to our hearts, and Teekay is proud to be helping Seafarers UK to meet the charity’s goals. Their team puts on a great event and we will be there again in 2015.’
The 24 Peaks Challenge raises funds to support seafarers in need and their families. Seafarers UK gives grants totalling £2.5 million last year. The charity receives no government funding and is dependent on fundraising events, individual donations and legacies to support more than 150, 000 people across the Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
