The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) congratulates the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on the decision taken today by the Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) to adopt a comprehensive Initial Strategy for significant reduction of GHG emissions from international shipping. The Strategy includes ambitious carbon reduction targets up to year 2050, with the clear vision of achieving carbon-free transportation at sea within this century.
Kathi Stanzel, INTERTANKO Managing Director said: “We are extremely pleased to see that IMO has succeeded to take this important step. It is the culmination of international efforts to develop both ambitious and concrete plans to respond to the challenge of our century. IMO has again clearly demonstrated its leadership role for the shipping industry in the effort to reducing and containing human contributions to climate change.”
Dragos Rauta, INTERTANKO Technical Director said: “The decision today gives a clear indication of IMO’s determination to pursue a tough line. We are proud that ship owner representatives like INTERTANKO were part of this process and proud to be able to contribute to it. More efforts are needed to materialise and implement the Strategy adopted today, efforts which INTERTANKO looks forward to support and provide professional assistance for.”
IMO will now continue its work through the MEPC with a clear goal to finalise and adopt its Final Strategy by 2023, which will define the details of selected concrete measures and actions needed to meet the objectives set by the decision today. INTERTANKO will continue to participate in, and contribute to, the development of these important details.
