26 April 2018 – DNV GL has approved in principle (AIP) the repair of offshore corroded deck plating using ColdShieldTM , the bonded composite product developed by Paris-based Cold Pad. ColdShieldTM is a composite structural reinforcement specifically developed for the harsh environments of offshore units like FPSO. The ColdShield-Metal design protects the surface from further corrosion and strengthen the surface locally and may contribute to global strength. Approval in Principle by DNV GL confirms that the design is feasible, achievable, and that Cold Pad was capable to demonstrate the ability of the product to behave in accordance with its specifications. ColdShieldTM becomes the first nonwelded structural repair available for a corroded FPSO hull as per DNV GL rules.

The AIP will be officially handed over during a ceremony at OTC, Houston, Texas, on Tuesday 1 May at
11am on DNV GL booth 4253.

of structural bonding for the Offshore industry and especially FPSOs (maintenance and life extension).
COLDPAD solutions include FPSO hull & deck repairs through cold work techniques allowing to
maximize production uptime.
What is an AIP:
An AiP issued by DNV GL is an independent assessment of a concept within an agreed requirement
framework within DNV GL Rules, notations and regulations for which DNV GL is authorized to carry out
third part verification, confirming that a design is feasible and that no major obstacles (“show
stoppers”) would prevent the concept from being realized. The review is based on a minimum scope
of documentation agreed with DNV GL where all safety related aspects shall be covered, including
functional aspects affecting the evaluation of the design (e.g. assumptions used as basis for justification
of safety functions). The review may upon request from the Client include review of documents beyond
the minimum requirements to reduce the uncertainties related to the concept.
An AiP is a stand-alone process, but may be followed by General Approval for Ship Application (GASA).
The AiP will typically identify technical items or issues that will need to be addressed during detailed
design to prepare the design for Classification Approval.
