Speech: ‘US international financial diplomacy – Past, present, future,’ by Mark Sobel, US chairman, OMFIF

Published on 30 January 2019

In a speech delivered at an OMFIF roundtable in London, Mark Sobel, former deputy assistant secretary for international monetary and financial policy at the US Treasury, highlighted how nationalism and protectionism could shatter global confidence in the US and threaten past diplomatic efforts to promote a stronger world economy.

‘The need for international financial co-operation will be all the more pressing and challenging amid a fragmented and corroded world order with flagging US leadership,’ said Sobel. ‘The world’s financial diplomats, let alone America’s, face a very bumpy and uncertain road.’

The roundtable discussion focused on the US economic outlook, challenges to the dollar as the global reserve currency, the dollar’s geopolitical impact, and the role of multilateral organisations in safeguarding financial stability and fostering economic diplomacy.
