BCG@Delphi

Last week, a large BCG delegation had the opportunity to participate in the 4th annual meeting of the Delphi Economic Forum, joining more than 400 speakers and 2,000 global and local leaders.

This year’s theme was ‘The Challenge of Inclusive Growth’.

Returning from Delphi we can’t help but feel that something was different this year. There was a clear change in tone; a realization, a conviction even, that things must change.

A few key takeaways:

  • The next global downturn could be just around the corner. Europe is better prepared institutionally but much remains untested. Structural improvements to corporate productivity are essential to sustain growth; better leveraging scale and technology is key.
  • Technology is fundamentally changing business models and working norms; though we seem to be realising the magnitude of the change, there is still a long road ahead of us to effectively comprehend the ways in which technology will bring about change, the opportunities and challenges.
  • Social inclusion was high on the agenda in discussions, for the first time putting it as a priority on the corporate agenda.
  • As the pace of change in our economies increases, as a result of technological improvements, changing demographics etc, the need to learn how to re-skill and steer our workforces becomes key, not only for social inclusion but also for national competitiveness.

BCG was present in panels on ‘Managing the Downturn’, ‘Shipping’, ‘Effective Leadership’ and ’Artificial Intelligence’. Below you can find more details on each of them.

One of the most inspiring sessions for us this year was ’Hack the City’, which we hosted in collaboration with Delphi Economic Forum. Seeing young Greek students and entrepreneurs innovate with passion, work hard and absorb the coaching by our own team and deliver professional, convincing pitches on the night was remarkably rewarding. The reaction of the audience, the judges and the teams made for an incredibly moving moment. You can find more details below.

We also had the opportunity to host 18 business leaders for dinner, where Mirko Nikolic, BCG Senior Advisor, led a very engaged discussion on best practices in Leadership. It was gratifying to see this topic become so much more important for senior business leaders in Greece.

The 4th Delphi Economic Forum leaves us with optimism and plenty of food for thought.

Looking forward to the next one!
