Who runs your business?
OPTIMIZED FORMAT – INNOVATIVE IDEAS – PROFITABLE OPPORTUNITIES
The Little Engine that Could
Well, last week’s MEPC meeting is behind us and we can once again focus on the business of shipping instead of getting distracted by the positioning of interest groups and their various tactics (how did an “environmental” group get mobilized around slow steaming??? Did they really understand that what they were lobbying for would actually INCREASE emissions???).
As we head into the summer, I’m reminded of the children’s book about the little engine that had to climb a tall, formidable, mountain. He chugged and chugged (I wonder what those coal emissions looked like??) gaining ground steadily reciting the mantra: “I think I can, I think I can”. As he labored over the top and was whizzing down the other side, he jubilantly shouted “I thought I could! I thought I could!”
Shipping needs confidence in its ability to meet IMO 2020 regulations coming up, and GHG reductions which follow close behind. We need to understand that not only is this the right thing to do for the environment, but it is the right thing to do for our industry. With the court of public opinion in session, we cannot afford to have the public attempt to tell us HOW to run our business—we need to demonstrate daily that we can do it responsibly, professionally, transparently and expertly!
I have every confidence that the world’s second oldest industry can reach the top, and shout “I thought I could! I thought I could!!”
