The World Ocean Council (WOC) is proud to announce that the Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation, an award-winning polar education and youth engagement organization, joins the WOC.
The SOI Foundation’s mandate is to inspire and empower leadership for a sustainable future by connecting youth to nature, and to the knowledge, people, and resources to make a difference. Since 2000, SOI has led life-changing expeditions to the Arctic, Antarctic, and places in between. But that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its mission. Today, the planet faces unprecedented challenges, making youth voices, ideas and action more important than ever. SOI’s programs have diversified to inspire and empower a global network that takes action on climate change, supports healthy oceans and ecosystems, and contributes to building thriving communities in the Arctic, and around the world.
“As the Sustainable Blue Economy emerges in Canada, it is important for youth to be well-positioned to participate in, and lead its success, which is why we created our newest program, Blue Futures Pathways,” says Geoff Green, Founder & President of the SOI Foundation. “We are delighted to become members of the World Ocean Council and we look forward to engaging in the global perspective and bringing youth voices to the table.”
Paul Holthus, WOC Founding President and CEO said: “We are honored and excited to have the SOI Foundation come on board with the World Ocean Council. The polar regions are critical to the future of the ocean and have been a major focus of the WOC efforts to advance “Corporate Ocean Responsibility”. The WOC Young Ocean Professionals program seeks to engage those considering careers in the ocean sector to focus on sustainable development. With SOI, these themes come together: Polar regions and future professionals.”
