IMCA’s South America regional webinar focuses on competence

Andy Goldsmith , IMCA’s, Lead for South America

The November South American Regional Webinar of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) will be held  on Wednesday 24 November at 10:00 local time in Brazil (BRT) (UTC-3) and bring together the work of the South American Committee with that of the global Competence & Training Committee. Registration is at www.imca-int.com/calendar/imca-south-america-webinar-on-competence/

Being held in a mixture of English and Portuguese the key focus for the webinar, led by Chair John Chatten and Vice Chair Daniel Marins, supported by the committee members and with Andy Goldsmith as IMCA’s regional lead, will be on competence.

Andy Goldsmith , IMCA’s, Lead for South America explained:

The Competence & Training Committee delivers competence frameworks to support the industry by providing a basis for assessing levels of competence of its personnel in safety-critical positions.

“During the webinar our speakers, drawn from Subsea 7 (Celio Pessoa and Rafaela Rodriques), Fugro (Darren Walley), and Kongsberg (Simone de Uribe)will highlight a number of different aspects ranging from what competence is, what it means, why it is important. and how IMCA’s Competence Assurance process works; member company competence schemes; and how regulation in Brazil has encouraged training.

There is more on training when Lauder Azevedo of Sistac turns the spotlight on current IMCA Diving Training & Certification initiatives in South America; to be followed by The Brazilian Navy’s Lt Erika Lanes sharing details of IMCA’s contribution to Brazilian offshore training and competence development.

“It’s a packed and highly relevant programme with time also left for delegate questions to the panel.”

The Competence & Training Committee assists and supports other IMCA committees. In recent months, in addition to existing guidance and framework documentation, the Committee has published a series of articles and podcasts homing in on competence and its importance to the marine contracting industry. These encompass ‘Understanding Competence’; ‘Why use a competence scheme’; and ‘Challenges to implementing a competence scheme’.
