The Liberian Registry has deposited the ratified Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, and thereby sets in motion the implementation of this very important regulatory framework. The establishment of this convention will lead to an efficient and sustainable resolution to the challenges of ship recycling, effectively minimizing the environmental, occupational health, and safety risks. It considers the unique characteristics of world maritime transport and the need for securing the smooth withdrawal of ships that have reached the end of their operating lives.
Alfonso Castillero, CEO of the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), commented “As a founding member of the IMO, we at the Liberian Registry are very proud to have taken a significant role in the entry into force timeline of the Hong Kong Convention. We feel this convention will greatly benefit not just the environment and ship recyclers, but also our shipping partners as well, and open a wide range of economic opportunities for the global maritime industry.”
