9 November – Last night saw the second annual Greek Travel Awards ceremony take place at Six Park Place London.
The voting for the awards was conducted by leading package holiday comparison sites icelolly.com and TravelSupermarket, both part of parent company Ice Travel Group, with an amazing prize draw for a short trip to Corfu provided by SKY express, Greece’s fastest growing airline, and accommodation in the five-star luxury Mar-bella Collection.
The event also took place thanks to the Region of the Ionian Islands, Kos, Samos, and the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization, who worked with 2019 MasterChef Champion Irini Tzortzoglou to curate and produce a stunning Greek fish-based menu for guests.
Alexis Conran, Greek/British Actor, TV presenter, Times Radio Host and consumer champion of The Real Hustle presented the ceremony and ten awards to destinations across Greece in categories ranging from ‘Best Sailing Destination’ to ‘Best Instagrammable Destination’.
Over 2,000 consumers voted for favourite Greek holiday destinations with Rhodes surpassing the ever-popular Athens as best city break destination, whilst Corfu led as the best destination for gastronomy across the islands. Although Greece is known for its gastronomy, beaches and friendly locals, voters agreed Greece is a tourism destination that excels in what its culture and history and Olympia succeeded over both Thessaloniki and Crete as the best place to source culture across Greece.
When looking at active holidays, the Northern Sporades island of Alonissos emerged on top as a favourite for diving, Kefalonia topped Zagori and Lesbos for best walking destination and Kos was awarded top spot for the best Greek destination for biking. Ithaca took first place ahead of Andros and Symi as voters’ favourite sailing destination.
The dramatic volcanic landscape of Santorini always provides a stunning backdrop for pictures and was voted the best Instagrammable Greek destination, while Paros was celebrated as Greece’s most luxurious hotspot, with the Peloponnese narrowly coming in second.
The evening also celebrated the heroes of the industry who came together during the wildfires and floods over the summer and the islands of Rhodes and Skiathos received special awards for tackling the climate challenges of summer 2023.
Eleni Skarveli, Director of the UK Greek National Tourism Organisation, said “The Greek Travel Awards were a great way to celebrate the conclusion of the 2023 World Travel Market in London, offering a fitting tribute to our enduring partnership with the British trade for their constant support to Greece, which has once again resulted in a record-breaking year in tourism. These Awards enable us to spotlight all the unique and diverse Greek destinations, ensuring that British Holidaymakers will have a wealth of choices for their 2024 vacations.”
