WISTA 2025 AGM & Conference – Powering the Future of Shipping & Trade

Last week in Barcelona, Spain, WISTA International brought together global maritime and trade professionals for its 2025 AGM and Conference under the theme “Powering the Future of Shipping & Trade: Global Energy in Challenging Times

Over the course of October 22–24, over 450 attendees from all around the world gathered to explore evolving trends in shipping, trade and logistics, to network and to shape the direction of the industry. The event saw strong participation from the Presidents of National WISTA Associations (NWAs) and company-leaders alike.

Keynote Speakers and Sessions

A highlight of the conference was the participation of Arsenio Domínguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), who discussed the IMO’s role in advancing decarbonisation and gender equality across the maritime sector.

Other notable speakers included:

  • Karin Orsel, CEO of MF Shipping Group and President of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations, who participated in a panel on Decarbonization: Impacts on Shipping, Cruise, and Energy Industries.
  • Isabel Ryckbost, Secretary-General of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), who led a session on Shore Power and Port Electrification.
  • Marta Prado Larburu, CEO of DS4T – Digital Solutions for Trade, who addressed International Trade Challenges.

Moreover, WISTA International president Elpi Petraki delivered a monumental speech focusing amongst others on the record number of WISTA members worldwide – just over 6,000!!!

WISTA Personality of the Year 2025

The conference also celebrated the achievements of Dr. Frida María Armas Pfirter, who was honoured as the 2025 WISTA International Personality of the Year. Dr. Armas Pfirter is recognised for her outstanding contributions to the maritime industry and her commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the sector.

The conference programme itself offered deep dives into how the maritime sector must adapt to changing energy flows, digitalisation, sustainability pressures and geopolitical shifts. Beyond formal sessions, delegates embraced Barcelona’s vibrant setting to network, exchange ideas and forge partnerships.

Looking ahead, WISTA members and NWAs are entering a promising phase of growth, stronger governance and enhanced global presence. As one delegate put it: “Now is the time to connect, collaborate and power the future of shipping and trade together.”

Finally, Many Congratulations to Connie Roozen for her seven years as WISTA International Treasurer AND needless to say Well Done to the host country: Spain!!!!.
