From the Economist’s 30th Round Table Discussion with the Greek Government “Progress in a time of turmoil”
Ann Applebaum: Business brings Trump and Erdogan closer
“Trump’s close relationship with Erdogan stems from his business activities in Turkey,” emphasizes Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author, Ann Applebaum . In an interview she gave to the Economist Enterprise Events for SE Europe , as part of the 30th Annual Government Roundtable held in Lagonisi, she cites the following way in which, in her opinion, the American president operates: “He does not think like a traditional US president. He thinks ‘what’s good for me’ and considers his personal view to be identical to official United States policy.”
Applebaum also analyzes Donald Trump’s calculations in the Middle East: “It is obvious that he did not take into account the possibility of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz. It also seems that he had not taken into account the possibility of Iran responding by striking Gulf states. He expressed surprise, even though everyone knew that both of these scenarios were entirely possible. Either he did not believe them, or he did not listen to the warnings, or those who informed him did not speak loudly and clearly enough.”
She refers to the current US foreign policy in relation to NATO: “It is difficult to imagine how the United States could function without its military bases in Europe, in terms of projecting American power worldwide. However, it is at the same time clear that the current administration does not consider the preservation of NATO or the further strengthening of the Alliance as a priority. In this sense, its policy is contradictory.”
