Enclosed Space Entry – how to raise the level of safety
Accidents in enclosed spaces happen regularly. Although the industry is aware of the danger a number of accidents could have been prevented by improving the planning of mandatory drills and training. The aim of the Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on Crew Familiarization for Enclosed Space Entry is to check if effective procedures and measures are in place and if there is compliance with the applicable requirements of the SOLAS Convention. >>

What’s new on the regulatory agenda – news for 2016
The end of the year 2015 is approaching fast, time to think about the upcoming regulatory changes that will be mandatory from 2016. Get a quick overview what’s on the agenda and find out more about some of the major amendments from 68th session of MEPC and 95th session of MSC. >>

Effective CO2 monitoring in shipping
DNV GL offered some 60 maritime customers and stakeholders a look ahead at the implications of the European Monitoring and Reporting Scheme (MRV) recently. Held in Limassol, Cyprus, at the invitation of the Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping, the briefing examined the new regulations, which entered into force on 1st July 2015 and will become fully effective on the 1st of January 2018. They require shipowners and operators to annually monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions for vessels equal to or larger than 5, 000 GT, which call at any EU port. The results will be published and will create a new kind of benchmarking system for sustainability. >>

Applied investigation: Vortex generators and CFD save the day for vibration-plagued ship
A 1200 TEU China-built container vessel suffered from high vibration and noise levels right from the sea trials, both in laden and in ballast condition. A comprehensive measurement survey by DNV GL revealed the main deficiencies: The propeller showed unusually high pressure pulses at second and fourth-order blade frequencies, which caused several pieces of on-board equipment to vibrate. >>

ECO Retrofit service – making bulbous bow optimizations future-proof
Many shipowners and operators are turning to bulbous bow retrofits to increase their vessels’ energy efficiency. DNV GL has developed a new tool as part of the ECO Retrofit service to support the industry in tailoring retrofit projects to the future needs of their fleet. While the service identifies new bow shapes based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations, the new tool explores the effect of alternative operational options. Overall, this approach can customers help save five to ten per cent on their annual fuel bill. >>
