WATCH | Gender and geographical diversity to be discussed on World Sailing Trust panel

Gender and geographical diversity will be at the forefront of a World Sailing Trust live streamed panel session on Wednesday 28 October.

Moderated by Shirley Robertson OBE, the session will be available to watch on World Sailing’s YouTube Channel HERE from 1400 – 1500 UTC.

The discussion will be focused on two main areas:

  • Focus One: Inclusion and diversity and how to engage and empower young people to get involved with sports governance and the actions that can be taken.
  • Focus Two: Gender and diversity and what sailing and all international federations can do to support initiatives to make progress.

Panellists include:

  • Dee Caffari, Chair of the World Sailing Trust
  • Miguel Crespo, Head of Participation and Coaching, Integrity and Development at the International Tennis Federation
  • Jennifer Cooper, UN Women, Sport for Generation Equality
  • Irina Gladkikh, Association Director at the IOC in charge of Winter and Recognised Sports
  • Lindani Mchunu, South African National Council Transformation Councillor
  • Rob Holden, World Sailing Training and Delivery Manager
  • Dawn Riley, Executive Director at Oakcliff Sailing
  • Sally Barkow, US Sailing Olympic Program Manager

Victoria Low, Head of the World Sailing Trust, commented, “Gender and geographical diversity are ever-present and powerful in sport and as professionals, we must recognise and value cultural diversity.

“To date our focus has been on gender and the fact that stereotypes and media representations still convey the message that sailing is a masculine activity – and we still have a lot of work to do in this space. However, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status also limit opportunities in our sport, so we need to come together to advocate for inclusive excellence in our events, programmes and organisations to expand our reach and promote the sport.

“Tune in to the World Sailing Trust’s Discussion on Gender and Geographical Diversity and listen to our panel of experts discuss how to expand the reach of sailing to a wider, diverse and more inclusive audience.”
