DATE: January 12, 2013 COUNTRY: Australia PORT: Dampier – Port re-opened

The Harbour Master at Dampier has announced that the port has re-opened from 1000 hours today (12 January) as Tropical Cyclone Narelle is now 300 miles distant and is moving further away.

Conditions in the port are improving, however, there are frequent squalls with gusts to 40 knots and showers restricting visibility. A swell in excess of two metres has been reported at Woodside 9 beacon.

Individual facilities will reopen when wind and swell criteria are met.

The DCW and BLB remain closed because of the swell and it is unlikely based on forecast conditions that they will reopen before Monday (14 January).

Masters should exercise additional care in the stormy conditions whilst operating in the port.

The resumption of pilotage services will depend on conditions in the port moderating sufficiently to ensure safe transfers.

Meanwhile, Port Walcott anchorages and terminal currently remain closed. Vessels are not expected to begin reberthing at Port Walcott before Monday (14 January) due to the heavy swell conditions at the berths.
