Planned lock chamber closures at Kiel-Holtenau

The Kiel Canal Authority has announced that the Big South Lock Chamber at
Kiel-Holtenau will be out of service between 07:00 and 17:00 hours from
Tuesday 20 May until Thursday 22 May.

During the closure times, the Big North Lock Chamber and the Small North
Lock Chamber will remain in service.

Further temporary closures are scheduled during week 23. Exact times will
be announced separately.

Ship engineers’ strike averted

The possible strike by 600 Norwegian engineers in service on ships has been
cancelled after the parties involved reached an agreement.

Safety Zone for boat races

The U.S. Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone on the
navigable waters of the Sabine River in Orange, TX in support of Deep South
Racing Association (DSRA) boat races, with effect between 8.30am and 6.00pm
from 31 May through 1 June.

The temporary safety zone is necessary to protect the surrounding public
and vessels from the hazards associated with a boat race competition.

Persons and vessels are prohibited from entering into, transiting through,
or anchoring within this safety zone unless authorized by the COTP or his
designated representative.

Incident reported in Bab El Mandeb

The U.S. Navy Maritime Liaison Office in Bahrain (MARLO) advises that on or
about 0420 UTC yesterday (14 May) the Master of a NW-motor vessel reported
being approached by two skiffs in position 12.44.8 North – 043.21.6 East in
the Bab El Mandeb (BAM).

It was undetermined if persons on the skiffs were armed but they closed the
vessel within 2 NM of the vessel. One skiff approached from Port Qtr
between Eritrea and Djibouti and the other passed close west to east.

Procedures IAW BMP4 were conducted including sounding the alarm and
activating the armed security team (AST). The skiffs moved away when the
AST showed their weapons.

The master also reports sighting a larger vessel within 6 nm on its
southbound bow which he presumed to be a mother boat at position 12 53.8 N/
043 18.4 E, although this is not confirmed.

Vessels within the vicinity of this alert are recommended to operate with a
heightened level of security and report any suspicious activity to MSCHOA,
UKMTO or MARLO.
