Lemissoler Navigation Co. Ltd., the Cyprus-based owner and operator, has selected the fuel-efficient MAN Alpha Kappel propeller design for a new series of 8 × 58, 500 DWT bulk carriers planned for delivery during 2015 and 2016.
The 6.8-metre, slow-running, four-bladed Kappel fixed-pitch propellers will be tailored to the SDARI-designed bulk carriers and a drivetrain powered by an MAN B&W 5S60ME-C engine, economy-rated at 8, 050 kW and 89 r/min. The new Lemissoler vessels will be characterised by trendsetting technology and a green operational profile that deliver an optimised fuel consumption and minimal emissions.
Thomas Leander, Senior Manager of Propeller & Aft Ship, MAN Diesel & Turbo expressed his satisfaction with the new Kappel propeller order: “The cooperation and optimisation process with the owners and SDARI (Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute) has been excellent, especially in terms of developing the fully optimised main-engine, propeller, shafting and aft-ship layout. Furthermore, this Kappel order gives MAN Alpha propellers a strong foothold within the medium- to large-sized bulker segment”.
The eight vessels will be built by New Times Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. of the New Century Shipbuilding Group, Jiangsu Province, China. The first four newbuildings will be classified by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and the remaining ones by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

Propeller production
MAN Diesel & Turbo’s propeller-production partner in China – Dalian Marine Propeller Co., Ltd (DMPC) – will manufacture the Kappel propellers for the Lemissoler bulkers. Each FPP will have a diameter of 6.8 m and a finished, machined weight of approximately 17.8 tons. This new contract follows an earlier order for a series of 7.2-metre Kappel propellers manufactured by DMPC for the world’s largest + 8500 ceu car carriers under construction for Höegh Autoliners, and some retrofit orders following the recent Keppel/Singapore Kappel propeller exchange job for Great Eastern Shipping Company’s 105, 000-DWT crude-oil carrier ‘Jag Lavanya’.
