GAC 01072014Mariners urged to prepare for heavy weather
August 06, 2014, United States, Honolulu, Hawaii

The U.S. Coast Guard is urging the public to prepare for the onset of heavy weather expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands Thursday [7 August].

The effects of Hurricane Iselle and Tropical Storm Julio are expected to generate extreme sea conditions, storm surge and surf of 10-15 feet throughout the Main Hawaiian Islands….

….The Coast Guard is working closely with local and state first responder agencies. Once the storm begins to impact the islands, emergency responders may not be able to assist those in danger. The public is urged to heed all evacuation orders. Mariners should seek safe harbor and shelter.

Mariners should secure their boats and boating equipment. Owners of large boats are urged to move their vessels to protected marinas where they will be less likely to break free of their moorings or to be otherwise damaged. It may be advisable for smaller boats to be pulled from the water and stored in a place that is not prone to flooding and is protected. Regardless of location, all loose items aboard vessels should be secured or removed….

Plans for new canal announced
August 06, 2014, Egypt, Suez Canal

Egypt has unveiled its plan to build a new Suez Canal alongside the existing 145-year-old waterway, and digging is already underway.

The project will see the creation of a new canal parallel to the old one, with the same depth and width, creating a two-way waterway.

The existing Canal is already double-sided in some parts, and the new project will extend this to allow the transit of ships in both directions.

The new side of the canal expected to be completed within a year in additional to two tunnels passing under the canal to connect the east and west banks. There are also plans for new container terminals and other marine-related infrastructure.

The Suez Canal earns Egypt about $5 billion a year. The new Canal s expected to boost annual revenues to $13.5 billion by 2023.

The armed forces would be in charge of the new project for security reasons.
