  • Shipowner E.R. Schiffahrt Successfully Certified to ISO 50001 (Energy Management)
  • ·         DNV GL 5-Star Excellence Certificate Renewed

Hamburg,  10 September 2014 — Hamburg-based shipowner E.R. Schiffahrt has successfully completed the certification process pursuant to ISO Standard 50001 (Energy Management Systems). Last week Tor Svensen, CEO of DNV GL Maritime, handed over the ISO certificate to Dr Herrmann Klein, CEO of E.R. Schiffahrt. This makes E.R. Schiffahrt the first German shipowner to have its entire fleet certified to all standards relevant to the shipping industry, including the compulsory SIM and ISPS codes and the MLC 2006 standard as well as the voluntary ISO standards 9001, 14001, OHSAS 18001 and most recently, ISO 50001.

“When a ship-owning company chooses to improve the safety of its vessels, commit to more environmentally sound operating practices and adopt an optimised management system, it builds competitive advantage and earns the reputation of being an ethical enterprise. With this new certificate E.R. Schiffahrt underscores its commitment to making continuous, sustainable investments in optimising energy efficiency and service quality. E.R. Schiffahrt thus demonstrates it is well capable of handling the challenges of the maritime industry, ” said Svensen.

Based on the data it gathers, E.R. Schiffahrt will implement specific technical and educational measures to improve energy efficiency. This ongoing improvement process in line with the shipowner’s integrated management system will be supported by annual periodical audits, both internal and external, as well as a re-certification procedure after three years. “We are extremely pleased we were able to implement a structured energy management system on our ships within a short period of time. It allows us to capture and document our energy utilisation and consumption performance continuously. Having a state-of-the-art energy management system in place and minimising the fuel consumption of our vessels are crucial prerequisites for maintaining our competitive edge, ” emphasises Dr Hermann Klein.

DNV GL Excellence Certificate Renewed

E.R. Schiffahrt also received its new DNV GL Excellence Certificate which attests to reliable ship operation and confirms adherence to an established set of above-average safety, environmental and quality standards.

The ship-owning company has been holding this certificate for three years. E.R. Schiffahrt is one of only eight shipping companies worldwide to have been awarded this certificate. Following this year’s audit which confirmed that all criteria are being met, the new ISO 50001 certificate as well as E.R. Schiffahrt’s participation in the UN Global Compact are stated prominently on the newly-issued certificate.
