Top 10 Emerging Trends

Each week we provide 10 stats about Dry Cargo Trade to keep you informed about important trends:

1) The ‘rough wood’ trade has slowed in 2014 to a 2% growth at 122 million tonnes, compared to a CAGR of 9% over the last 5 years.
2) The sawn wood trade has fallen 7% in 2014 to 65 million tonnes but there remains a positive CAGR over the last 5 years of 9%.
3) Soya bean growth is expected to see a 10% rise in 2014, following a 9% rise in 2013.
4) Scrap steel is estimated to grow 2% in 2014 to nearly 106 million tonnes.
5) Following the Indonesian ban of raw mineral exports at the start of 2014, we expect nickel ore andbauxite trade to fall 25% and 13% respectively to 74 and 87 million tonnes for 2014.
6) Lignite trade had a CAGR of 48% over the last 5 years and the volume stands at nearly 71 million tonnes.
7) South African loadings have fallen 9% in 2014 to 148 million tonnes.
8) South East Asia dry cargo loadings are likely to fall 3% in 2014 to 675 million tonnes compared to a9% growth in 2013%.
9) However,  South East Asia dry cargo discharges grew 8% in 2014 to 234 million tonnes.
10) North America dry cargo discharges have remained flat for several years, however 2014 is expected to see a 3% rise to 211 million tonnes.
