Maritime and oil & gas engineers to get professional development boost

imarest-logoMatchtech and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) have today announced a partnership to support the professional development of engineers working in the maritime and oil and gas sectors.

The partnership will see Matchtech’s registered users able to gain a 12 month membership to the IMarEST and enables them to work towards a professional qualification, such as becoming Chartered.

This initiative is to address a key point raised as a result of Matchtech’s recent Confidence Index survey which discussed professionalisation of the industry. Confidence Index roundtable Chair, Dr. Rhys Morgan from the Royal Academy of Engineering, shared the statistic that of the 2.7 million self-declared engineers working in the UK, only 230, 000 are registered with a Professional Engineering Institution (PEI).

Natalie Desty, Head of Maritime and Oil and Gas for Matchtech commented: “Professional registration is valued extremely highly by both employees and employers, in fact in a recent survey 93% of maritime employers viewed registration as very important. However despite this importance, many engineers are not currently registered with an institution. This is why we are so excited to be offering our engineers complimentary membership of IMarEST for the first year. IMarEST provide huge value to their members including support, resources and information to help them develop at all stages of their career.”

David Kelly, Head of Marketing for the IMarEST added: “Employers are looking at those who are keen to enhance and maintain their professional development. Membership to the IMarEST not only demonstrates commitment to your career, but also allows you to use the experience that you’ve gained and put this towards an internationally recognised professional qualification, such as becoming a Chartered Marine Engineer.”

Additional benefits for members include: access to technical forums and meetings, technical journals, access to a vast maritime online library, as well as receiving the monthly Marine Professional publication.
