(Birkeroed, Denmark – Oct. 28, 2015) – (Marine NewsWire) Danelec Marine has published a White Paper providing details on the new performance standards for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), which came into force in August 2015.
The White Paper notes that the new standards provide improved functionality; safer navigation; enhanced cyber security; standardization of displays, vocabulary and operation; reduced training needs; and smoother integration with Voyage Data Recorders, bridge alert management and bridge navigational watch alarm systems.
The Danelec Marine document describes why the new standards were needed and provides a detailed summary of changes in IEC 61174, IHO S-52 and IHO S-64.
“The previous standards remain valid for 12 months, ” said Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine. “By August 2016, all new ECDIS installations must comply with the new standards, and all installed ECDIS products should be upgraded to comply with the new standards, subject to decisions of individual flag states. There is no provision for ‘grandfathering’ existing ECDIS products already type-approved to the old standard.”
Ottosen noted that all Danelec Marine DM800 ECDIS products can be upgraded to be in full compliance with the new performance standards. The company’s new ECDIS platform enables upcoming software updates to be installed by the ship’s crew.
