(SAN JOSE, Costa Rica; Dec. 17, 2016) – Crowley Maritime Corp.’s liner and logistics group in Central America recently received National Road Safety Recognition from the Costa Rica Ministry of Public Works for their focus on regional, national and local road safety. During an awards ceremony, which took place Dec. 10, in San José, Costa Rica, Crowley was recognized for their strategies to reduce accidents and fatalities while transporting cargo.

Bernard Paniagua, Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), regional road safety project manager, accepted the special recognition on behalf of Crowley.

“This special recognition would not have been possible without the support of Central America senior management, especially Jorge Campabadal, southern zone vice president, who championed the initiative, ” said Paniagua. “The land operations team’s focus on Crowley’s goal of zero – zero harm to people, property and the environment – also contributed heavily. Together, we are focusing on setting the regional road safety benchmark when it comes to moving cargo.”

The National Road Safety Recognitions are presented to companies who take a leadership position by formulating and implementing high level road safety initiatives.  In 2015, Crowley met all the requirements of this program by analyzing drivers’ traffic infractions and road safety risk factors; attending more than 25 road safety management training courses and developing and sharing road safety best practices, such as their Expert Driver Campaign which is focused on carriers, owners, coordinators, drivers and other industry stakeholders.

“In 2015, we decided to join the program. As a safety focused company already, we were able to complete all established requirements, ” said Campabadal. “We look forward to continuing our efforts and presenting additional, positive results in 2016.

During the ceremony, Crowley representatives also announced that in 2015, the company has achieved a reduction of 92 percent in terms of severe and/or fatal road accidents.

“You, Crowley, are leading the journey within the industry, ” said German Valverde, road safety council director. “There will be a lot more to say about your ‘Expert Driver Campaign.’ Way to go!”

“Originally, when we formulated this project, the idea was to improve our process, but it has since grown significantly to a point where we are making a difference within the market, both in terms of the safety of our drivers and in delivering excellent, reliable services to customers, ” said Miguel Artiga, vice president, logistics, Central America.

“Our best safety efforts are yet to come” said Claudia Kattan, vice president, liner services, Central America. “We are heading in the right direction, and I’m confident that our Central America road safety initiatives will take us to the next level in order to meet and exceed our customer’s needs.”
