On 19 April 2012, the Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization agreed to amend the limits under the 1996 Protocol to the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims 1976, and in many Contracting States the revised limits entered into force on 8 June 2015 under the tacit acceptance procedure. However, this was not the case in England.
Following a public consultation, a statutory instrument has been laid in Parliament and is scheduled to come into force on Wednesday 30 November 2016.
