04.10.17 – The Nautical Institute is proud to announce that its long-running human element project Alert! has won the 2017 Safety4Sea Initiative Award.
From 2003 to 2016, 40 issues of the highly acclaimed Alert! international human element bulletin were published and no fewer than 2.5 million copies distributed worldwide, thanks to funding by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Alert! has been widely recognised as a major contributor to better understanding of the human element in the maritime world.
Captain Nikos Aslanis, chairman of The Nautical Institute’s Hellenic Branch, accepted the honour on behalf of the Institute at the awards ceremony on 3 October at the Yacht Club of Greece in Piraeus. He said:

“The Alert! material belongs to us all and forms a great industry resource that should enhance all of our operational endeavours, from the initial design of a ship through to its recycling. It offers practical advice from professionals all over the world on issues as diverse as design and maintenance to communications and wellbeing – for it is when all these issues come together that a ship becomes truly ‘fit for purpose’ and therefore safe and effective.”
Although production of the bulletin ended in 2016, the legacy of the project continues. In July, the Institute issued the Alert! Compendium. This handsome, full-colour case bound volume brings together all 350 articles that were published over the project’s 13-year run.
The Institute has pledged to place a copy of the Compendium in every maritime training college in the world, to ensure that this vital information is accessible to all, from seafarers, ship managers and shipowners to naval architects, designers and regulators. The fully indexed book also includes the Human Element Competencies Framework that has been submitted to IMO. Additional copies can be purchased from the Institute’s online bookshop.

In addition to the Safety4Sea Initiative Award, Alert! previously gained industry recognition with the 2004 Seatrade Award, the 2005 RINA Ship Safety Award and the 2012 Lloyd’s List Global Award for Training.
