More than 325 delegates from 18 countries* gather in Glasgow this week for the 14th International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC 2018) incorporating the International Ship Control Systems Symposium (iSCSS), an IMarEST (Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology) Learned Society conference. The duo of events is being held 2-4 October at the Technology & Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde.
“The theme for INEC 2018 is Inspiring Naval Engineering and as INEC continues to evolve and reflect the international scale of naval programmes, I am delighted that this year’s programme encompasses the International Ship Control Systems Symposium (iSCSS),” explains INEC’s Conference Chairman Captain Matt Bolton RN. “The theme for iSCSS isRevolutionary Technology Inspiring Ship Control, establishing this forum once again after an absence of nine years, not only for the naval engineering sector, but for the marine industry worldwide.
“Over 100 technical papers will be presented at this week’s event, the largest number ever for an INEC conference. It is highly rewarding to see that 22 of the presentations are candidates for the Sir Donald Gosling Award (for authors 35 or under), they are the future of naval innovation, they come from seven countries – China, Colombia, Italy, Singapore, The Netherlands, UK and USA.

Welcome address and keynotes
The conference opens with a welcome address by Professor Sir Jim McDonald FREng FRSE, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde and keynote addresses by Rangesh Kasturi, President L3 MAPPS; Rear Admiral Paul Methven, Director Submarine Acquisition, Royal Navy; and Commodore Peter Knipping MBE RNLN, Chief Naval Engineering Officer, Royal Netherlands Navy before splitting into the streams for INEC and iSCSS.
Cdr Rinze Geertsma RNLN is the chair of the iSCSS Technical Advisory Committee, and explains “I am honoured to chair this Symposium with its distinguished history of technical symposia spanning over 50 years and last organised in 2009.iSCSS represents an opportunity to influence future control strategies, I am looking forward to a highly stimulating few days with long term effects.
“With its theme ‘Revolutionary Technology Inspiring Ship Control’ it is not surprising that it incorporates a special session on the ‘Exploitation of marine robotic systems,’ which has been organised by the new generation of professionals on ourTechnical Advisory Committee who have, of course, grown up with these state-of-the-art technologies.”

INEC and iSCSS are supporters of the UK’s Year of Engineering and will play host to up to 40 school students aged 10-18 years old from four schools on Wednesday 3 October when a STEM Day is staged with the support of the Royal Navy and exhibitors.
Taylor & Francis, the publisher of IMarEST’s journals will run two workshops during INEC/iSCSS 2018, one on ‘How to get published: Understanding research and publishing’, and the second on ‘How to become an effective reviewer’.
Networking events
No IMarEST event would be complete without a calendar of networking events. A welcome reception will be held at the close of Day One (2 October) in the exhibition area hosted by The City of Glasgow, with special thanks to The Lord Provost and Glasgow City Council.
The conference reception at the close of Day Two (3 October) will be held at The Riverside Museum, an award winning transport museum. With more than 3,000 objects on display, from skateboards to locomotives, paintings to prams, velocipedes to voiturettes, this new museum records Glasgow’s important maritime history. The much-acclaimed development, designed by architect, Zaha Hadid has a riverside location where the River Clyde meets Glasgow’s other main river, the Kelvin. The 19th-century sailing ship Glasgow’s Tall Ship the Glenlee, is moored outside the museum.
