The Summer of Sailing 2019/2020

We previously announced the 2019 Worlds will be in Auckland, New Zealand in early December 2019. Complimenting that regatta is the freshly signed 2020 Worlds to be held in Geelong, Australia in mid-February 2020.

Our fleets will be able to head down under for a five regatta series between two fantastic sailing venues for an intense bit of racing and training in the final build up to Tokyo 2020

Geelong welcomes Olympic sailors for 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in 2020

Three of the highest profile Olympic sailing classes will converge on Geelong in February 2020, with the 2020 49er, 49erFX & Nacra 17 World Championships set to be hosted by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club on the beautiful flat waters of Corio Bay.

With the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Australia is the perfect location for these elite sailors to compete in the 2020 World Championship and make their final preparations before heading to Japan.

Massive Viewership at Shanghai Cup

The Shanghai Cup was a fun regatta this year again. 11 international teams and the local Chinese team raced 12 races over three days. The lake used was fantastic, as it’s a circle that is about 30% bigger than a race course area, so the water stayed super flat while winds grew over 20 knots. Teams had a blast, and so did the public.

The stats are a little difficult to decipher, but it seems like there was a reach of 750,000 people over the multiple online platforms, including 122,000 simultaneous live viewers at the peak!

Plans for 2019 are coming together. The regatta will be right after the regattas in Japan, and should include racing on both the lake and the Bund (downtown Shanghai).

The Shanghai Yacht Club sponsorship of the Nacra 17 class provides tremendous support to the growth of the class and a route to professionalizing Olympic sailing beyond any other avenues currently open.

In the inaugural games for the 49erFX, the women of skiff lit up the shores of Brazil in spectacular fashion. The regatta came down to a single race for all the medals, and only a couple seconds separating gold and silver.

Junior Worlds Heading to Risor, Norway

The 2019 (U23) Junior World Championship will be in Risor, Norway. The growing skiff fleet in Norway is excited to host the next generation of Olympic stars.

Risor hosted a World Match Race Tour event in 2018 very successfully and is gearing up for a memorable event next year. Teams will head north immediately following Keiler Woche to this spectacular venue!

Portugal Grand Prix for Feb 2019

For sailors not going to Miami this winter, there is a second GP scheduled for Vilamoura. Along with the mid-December test, an additional regatta was added for mid-February. Check it out on the calendar.
