HELMEPA on the border islands of Astypalea, Tilos, Chalki, Kastelorizo and Symi
HELMEPA took part in the 7th crossing of Axion Hellas, between 7 and 13 April, visiting the islands of Astypalea, Tilos, Chalki and Kastelorizo as a member of this year’s educational and cultural team together with 10 more organizations.
Members of the Association’s staff spoke on the marine environment and the problem of pollution of the oceans, mainly from plastics, to 200 students of these remote islands, interacted with them through educational games, executed simple environmental experiments and coordinated beach clean ups with the participation of motivated locals and volunteer members of Axion Hellas.
Our presence at the Dodecanese, on the occasion of the initiatives of Axion Hellas, gave us the opportunity to respond to the kind invitation of the old seafarer Member of HELMEPA Capt. Nicolas Sikakis, by organizing a visit to the island of Symi. There we presented the need of protecting the marine environment to about 100 students of the two Elementary Schools and organized a voluntary clean up of the Nimporio beach with sea scouts of the 1st system of Sea Scouts of Symi.
The smiles on the children’s faces and the warmth with which the local residents of these remote areas embraced us constitute for all of us in HELMEPA the biggest reward and we sincerely thank them for that!
