Chelsea Technologies announces further significant wash water monitor order from Fuji Electric

Order from Japanese scrubber manufacturer reflective of the acceleration in industry-wide uptake of scrubber technology

14 May, 2019 – Chelsea Technologies, a world leader in the design and manufacture of sensors for the maritime sector and a Sonardyne company, has today announced a significant order from Fuji Electric Company Limited for its Sea Sentry wash water monitoring system for ship exhaust gas cleaning systems. The order follows an initial significant order in October 2018 and comes during a period of industry-wide acceleration in the uptake of scrubbers.

Accurate monitoring for compliance is a vital prerogative for the international shipping industry as owners and operators come under scrutiny to comply with a wide range of increasingly stringent environmental regulations that cover almost all major aspects of vessel operations. Not meeting compliance standards means that shipowners could face hefty fines, downtime and loss of earnings. Good governance in providing accurate data is vital to demonstrating compliance while maintaining operational efficiency, profitability, and protecting reputation.

Chelsea’s Sea Sentry provides a fully autonomous wash water monitoring system for both the water inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems, providing the ability to accurately measure the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, absorbance, turbidity (to ISO 7027:1999), temperature and pH of scrubber wash water. The system can monitor open-loop, closed-loop and hybrid scrubber systems, and has been certified by DNV GL and ClassNK, providing assurance to shipowners and operators that the system meets the utmost standards in quality, accuracy, and operational efficiency, setting the gold standard for accurate wash water monitoring.

Dr Brian Phillips, Executive Chairman, Chelsea Technologies, commented:

“It is imperative that shipowners have a in-built capability to allow them to monitor and manage wash water in an accurate, fail safe, simple and efficient way, providing peace of mind and assurance, but also – vitally – offering a tangible recourse for shipowners and operators with legislators such as Port State Control, as well as insurers, charterers and financiers. For scrubber manufacturers, installing monitoring technology in their units provides reassurance to shipowners making this significant investment that they have the capability to monitor and manage wash water and provide proof that they are compliant. This is not only good risk management, but can add to the bottom line in making shipowners and operators more attractive to charterers.”

Current IMO guidelines do not contain any limits for the concentrations of metals in wash water discharge, although the IMO requests that shipowners sample and analyse wash water for a suite of metals. Through having a robust monitoring mechanism in place, shipowners and operators will have access to the information they need to allow them to take action that will prevent the ingress of contaminants through the discharge of scrubber wash water.

Dr Phillips continued:

“Crucially for shipowners and operators, Chelsea’s Sea Sentry system is not a black box that is delivered and forgotten. We see it as implicit to work directly with scrubber manufacturers, shipowners and operators to manage the installation and operation of the system, and our support is constantly at hand to interpret and apply the data that will ultimately prove compliance.”

Chelsea is a leading global provider of highly advanced sensors and systems that perform a crucial role in providing accurate and reliable testing for compliance with environmental regulations. The company has taken all available measures to verify that Sea Sentry provides accurate and robust data to demonstrate compliance with IMO Annex VI wash water discharge regulations, underpinning the company’s commitment to achieving type approval for all of its systems
