Commentary: Macri defeat prompts crisis fears

President Macri’s defeat in Argentina’s primary presidential elections was unexpected. The Peronist leader Alberto Fernández is now the frontrunner to become president by year-end. The prospect of a return to the failed Kirchner policies of the past has seen the peso slump by around 30% and the Argentine stock market lose half its value. In hindsight, Macri’s poor policy sequencing and his ‘gradual’ economic reform strategy were grave mistakes. The question now is what the IMF’s future Argentine involvement will be.
