The manifesto submitted by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in the run up to the 12 December UK general election contains the most left-wing proposals seen in a western democracy since the ‘common programme’ of 1970s France. The Labour proclamation stands in stark contrast to the ‘safety first’ manifesto presented by Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Neither party may win a majority, and a second referendum may prove to be the only way to wade out of the Brexit quagmire. Much hinges on the reception of Corbyn’s statist policies.
