Tools for Managing Disruption

The past three years we have seen disruption in shipping operations due to regulatory and commercial impacts.  The past three months we have seen disruption due to the COVID-19 virus and its impacts on markets, mariners, office workers and more.  The past three weeks we have seen societal disruption in response to the brutal death of George Floyd illuminating racial injustice.

While each of these situations have varying challenges, a common thread is the need for open communication and response.  This is crisis communications at its core.

What creates fear and anxiety??  Lack of information on what is happening today and what the future holds.  This leads to anger and unrest.  Leaders need to be gathering information and communicating answers.  They need to be listening to the concerns of their stakeholders and let them know they have been HEARD.  They need to provide a portal for sharing ideas and solutions.

Whether we are discussing the disruption in shipping, the impacts of COVID-19 or the need for social justice, communication is key to building a cohesive and successful community.

Keep optimizing,
Carleen
