Covid-19 presents dire economic circumstances for emerging markets and developing countries. Eyes turn to the International Monetary Fund. The pandemic raises fundamental challenges for the IMF. It is the world’s premier balance of payments lender. Yet, its resources are limited. The impact of the virus on the IMF has only begun. It will require difficult judgements, balanced against a restrained budgetary envelope. It will be an epic challenge.

News: The US in the global order

The future of multilateralism is under threat, exacerbated by Covid-19 lockdown policies. Many questions have been raised over the post-1945 international economic system built by the US and its allies, and the influence of today’s global powers in reshaping it for the next century. Earlier this week, OMFIF convened a panel featuring Robert Dohner, deputy assistant secretary at the US Treasury (2005-18), to discuss major themes facing the global economy, in particular the international role of the US Treasury and Federal Reserve, US-China relations and the future of the dollar.
