Commentary: Hamilton enters German election
By David Marsh in London
Strong opposition to Germany’s plans to use the Covid-19 crisis to promote European fiscal union and boost the continent’s ‘sovereignty’ has been voiced by Otmar Issing, the former economics chief at the European Central Bank. He takes issue with Finance Minister Olaf Scholz’s description of the EU’s joint debt issuance plans as marking a ‘Hamilton moment’ for Europe. Issing’s warning foreshadows a left-right split ahead of next year’s general election.
