Case Study: Preservation for drill ship during Market Downturn

CASE STUDY: LEARN HOW BESPOKE PRESERVATION STRATEGY CAN BE APPLIED TO SHIPS DURING MARKET DOWNTURN OR LULL PERIODS

You may have recalled on what we’ve shared couple of months ago on how the shipping sector can adapt with challenges pertaining to disruptions, trade demand and lock-downs, with the right contingencies and options to deal with it. Today, we’ll share a case study on what we’ve delivered an shipping asset preservation strategy with our customer. Read on to learn more.

Key Facts
2X Drill Ships
2 Year Contract
18X Air Conditioning units deployed
Remote Monitoring deployed

THE CHALLENGE
Preserve deep water drill ships during market downturn

During challenging market conditions, the client needed a solution to preserve critical spaces on board two of their deepwater drill ships for two years.

In the identified compartments, high value and vital equipment needed a conditioned
environment to prevent damage from erosion. The ships also needed to be able to run their existing systems which would require the gas turbine power generators on board to be operating. This would be costly for the client with a substantial amount needed for to cover the fuel and associated operating costs.

THE SOLUTION
Temperature control solution that replicates ships’ on-board air-conditioning system
Aggreko’s approach included a detailed scoping study onboard both vessels to understand the customer’s requirements to design a total solution to meet their specific needs.

While various dehumidificaiton solutions were available in the market from other suppliers, these solutions would result in a higher space temperature (40-50degrees celsius). We were able to engineer a solution to replicate similar conditions to the drill ships’ incumbent onboard air conditioning system.

On winning the project following the scoping studies, we designed and executed a full temperature control solution of 18 units across both ships. This included a variety of packaged air conditioners ranging from AC100s to AC200s, along with supporting generators to power them for the duration of the drill ships cold storage. A temperature of 24°C and 55% relative humidity was maintained with a total power capacity  of 1.1MW.

THE IMPACT
Critical spaces maintained with minimal monitoring
The critical spaces were conditioned and met the requirements which Aggreko set out to
achieve for the customer. With the combination of both Aggreko Remote Monitoring ARM) and maintaining constant environmental temperatures which allowed a stable operation of the units, minimal monitoring from the customer was needed.
