Greek Shipping Awards 2020 ‘will reflect resilience of Greek shipping’
Lloyd’s List awards dedicated to Greece will be held as an online ‘virtual’ event for the first time, with impressive support from a long list of highly reputable Greek and international sponsors
For the first time since they were established in 2004, the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards will not be presented in front of a large shipping audience gathered in Athens.
But the coronavirus pandemic has not stopped the 2020 Awards, which will be presented instead in an online ‘virtual’ event streaming on Friday, 4 December.
According to the organisers, the fact that the Awards are going ahead is primarily recognition of the resilience and service of the Greek shipping industry that itself has continued to operate without interruption in spite of the many challenges created by the Covid-19 crisis.
“We feel it is our duty to the shipping community to ensure that the Awards recognise the industry’s many achievements in 2020,” said Lloyd’s List’s journalist in Greece, Nigel Lowry, who also directs the annual awards event.
“It’s certainly a challenge to work out how to hold the Awards ceremony online and preserve the excitement of the in-person event, but we also see it as an opportunity as we hope that we can reach new industry people, including viewers outside Greece, who will see the Awards ceremony for the first time.”
In the new online format the Awards have continued to draw phenomenal support led by overall Event Sponsor ClassNK and the sponsor of the traditional Champagne Toast to Greek Shipping, China Classification Society, the list of sponsors recently gained Vernicos Scafi Tugs & Salvage as Welcome Reception sponsor and the UK Ship Register as sponsor of the Award for Achievement in Education or Training, which completes a full house of 18 Awards sponsors for the event.
Lloyd’s List, the international shipping information provider since 1734, has been organising the event since 2004 and the Greek Shipping Awards has grown into the best-supported and largest shipping Awards event in the world.
Choosing the winners is the responsibility of a panel of judges from the industry that is partly refreshed in its composition from year to year. The 2020 jury has a particularly fresh look as half the members are making their debut on the panel.
The Awards event, which will see the winners of the 18 Awards unveiled online, is a free-to-view event that will be streamed on www.lloydslist,com and www.greekshippingawards.gr on Friday, 4 December at 18.30 Athens time.
