Commentary: Brown is the new green

‘Brown’ or ‘dirty’ industries could become the most sought-after targets in capital markets. Investors focused on environmental, social and governance factors are concentrating increasingly on achieving the highest impact through transition, rather than on minimising headline risk. They have much to gain from steering corporate shifts to more effective lower-carbon strategies. These more targeted strategies are set to take over today’s dominant tactics of blunt exclusions and integration through blended scores.

Obituary: Valéry Giscard d’Estaing

Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the former French president and finance minister, who has died aged 94, was an enigmatic figure, epochally significant in fostering post-war Franco-German rapprochement and European integration. He helped forge economic and monetary union and the euro by setting up the European Monetary System in 1978-79 with friend, confidant and sparring partner West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, his pivotal alter ego who died in 2015 aged 96.
