A group of 74 Japanese banks and corporations is forming a system to digitise bank deposits, creating a blockchain payments network. The system neatly circumvents a number of thorny questions about the legal status of stablecoins as well as exploring creative uses of the technology, like green certificates for clean electricity. The Digital Currency Forum – including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp – will launch a digital currency platform in 2022.

Commentary: Where will the vegetable oil come from to fuel our planes?

The International Air Transport Association’s report on how the airline industry plans to get to net-zero emissions by 2050 is fascinating. The report explains that changes within our grasp will contribute a meagre 3% to the net zero progression. The remaining 97% will come from more progress in the field of carbon capture, carbon offsetting and a switch to sustainable jet fuel. However, massive investment will be needed to produce enough fuel to meet demand.
