Turning Uncertainty into Confidence with DNV Maritime Academy

Turning Uncertainty into Confidence with DNV Maritime Academy

Investment in training allows companies to take better control of their future, as competence is built on knowledge which in turn, leads to greater personal and corporate success.

For more than 20 years now, DNV Maritime Academy’s main goals have been to share our expertise and knowledge with our customers, help them effectively improve their business performance, and find the best solutions for their everyday operations.

Through our global network and our digital platform, we are constantly broadening our educational horizons and enriching our syllabus to offer the industry a complete training programme of over 140 different standard courses. Comprehensive customized, individual, or company-related training programs, as well consultancy services for creating and developing specific training programs, are also provided.
DNV’s Maritime Academy provides one of the broadest portfolios of training courses to the maritime industry anywhere in the world. By participating in IMO meetings, we are also always up to date with the latest developments and decisions that shape the global maritime landscape.

Maritime Academy Hellas
Over the last 20 years, DNV’s Maritime Academy Hellas has conducted over 1150 training courses attended by 12650 participants from over 400 companies. More than 100 new companies came into touch with our organization through our training services and many companies specifically ask for our training services when signing contracts with DNV on other class items, a clear sign of their appreciation.

In 2021 alone, more than 150 courses were delivered. These were almost exclusively online, with a few exceptions of f2f classroom in house deliveries – and attended by over 1500 participants. Additionally, there was a significant expansion of our portfolio which allowed us to offer the industry new topics related to Decarbonization, Digitalization, Antifouling, Risk-based Technical Ship Management and Remote Surveys, and several other technical courses related to newbuildings, drydockings and operational issues.
The launch of our Training Portal in December 2020 was warmly received by the industry and helped our clients by providing them the ability to handle their training activities whenever they choose. It was an essential development towards the digitalization of the Maritime Academy and our services and helps us take the next steps into the future. It is also worth mentioning that due to the Portal and the online delivery of courses, we are now able to more easily cooperate with the Academies all over the world, to provide more courses and expand our services

Training during the most challenging times
Having coped with the COVID 19 pandemic in a very resilient and efficient way, Maritime Academy has succeeded in serving our clients throughout the year, providing high quality training solutions.
We are very proud that we were able to offer the Maritime Industry the option to take advantage of the “idle” time created and use it for training and competence building from the very start of the pandemic. All our face-to-face training activities were swiftly switched to remote e-courses. The response from the industry was both immediate and impressive and we have been able to accommodate these trainings with the same quality that characterises our services.

Another challenge to address is the rapid changes that take place with many new regulations and requirements coming into force either due to unexpected events (ISPS Code and the September 11 events), or due to evolving issues such as the protection of the marine environment (e.g. Ballast Water and Recycling), safety (e.g double hull tankers), energy efficiency (e.g. SEEMP, decarbonization and emission limitations, new requirement for fuels), digitalization, and the human element (e.g. soft skills). Especially in terms of decarbonisation, investment in education is a critical and necessary element for the industry to make a smooth transition to this new reality.
