Ocean Rebellion Press Calls—Detailed Press Releases to follow.
Ocean Rebellion will be protesting with their uniquely powerful visual performances at the United Nations Ocean Conference Lisbon
27th & 28th June 2022.
*Protest 1: Lisbon, Monday 27th June at 6am.* Near conference centre, precise location tbc.
As The Sea Dies We Die
At dawn on the first day of the conference Dead Merfolk are washed-up, caught in a trawler-net along with debris from the sea (both plastics and seakill). Reminding delegates that they must Act Now to save the ocean. Ocean Rebellion demands the UN calls for an end to all national fuel subsidies to fishing fleets and bans bottom trawling on the grounds of both needless biodiversity loss, through bycatch, and blue carbon release.
*Protest 2: Monday 27 June, 1pm* outside the main conference. (Lisbon Altice Arena Convention Center is located in Parque das Nações, Rossio dos Olivais, Lote 2.13.01A, 1990-231 Lisboa.)
No More Fish In The Sea
Three sinister fish-headed characters, clasping dead fish, wearing business suits and carrying briefcases, are there to call for a focus on overfishing and an end to devastating practices such as bottom trawling. Ocean Rebellion demands an 80% reduction in global fishing. World governments must ban industrial fishing and restrict fishing to valuable low-impact traditional techniques which support local communities. By turning the tide on fish profiteering we can help coastal communities protect the Ocean they cherish and understand.—
*Protest 3: Tuesday 28th June at 1pm* outside the main conference. (Lisbon Altice Arena Convention Center is located in Parque das Nações, Rossio dos Olivais, Lote 2.13.01A, 1990-231 Lisboa.)
0am outside the main conference.
U.N. UNFIT FOR PURPOSE
Three blind personas with bandaged, sightless eyes, wearing business suits, have the bodies of dead fish stuffed into their mouths, stopping them from speaking. The performance describes the blindness of the UN, and nation states, to the degradation of the Ocean and the need for an ambitious UN High Seas Treaty.
