Kazakhstan’s framework for CBDC issuance

The Republic of Kazakhstan started studying the feasibility of introducing a central bank digital currency back in May 2021. After finalising the initial pilot in December 2021, the National Bank of Kazakhstan has now released its decision-making framework for the issuance of its CBDC, the digital tenge. Binur Zhalenov, CEO of the Payment and Financial Technologies Development Center at the National Bank of Kazakhstan, joins OMFIF to discuss motivations and approaches to issuance of the digital tenge.
