The Marex International Maritime Legal Conference & Awards – 2022

Maritime Law has seen progressive changes in the last decade. While the International Maritime Organization, or IMO, ensures that existing international maritime legal conventions are kept up to date and develops new agreements when the need arises, the need to relook at the new local and global order in maritime from the lens of maritime stakeholders is much needed.

Keeping in view the need to deliberate impending concerns related to the Maritime-Legal sector, Marex Media is hosting a first of its kind Maritime-Legal Conference & Awards.

Titled, ‘The Marex International Maritime Legal Conference & Awards – 2022, this power-house event is to be held on 20th October 2022, in Mumbai.

The conference will facilitate discussions on various topics in the field of maritime law by speakers representing various bodies such as shipowners, insurers, P&I Clubs and correspondents, executives of trading companies, in-house and corporate counsel, maritime and commercial arbitrators and lawyers, executives engaged in the maritime and commodities industry; with the intent to gain insights from eminent judges, arbitrators, lawyers, policy makers and regulatory authorities

The conference board is spearheaded by Mrs. Harjeet Kaur Joshi (Former Chairperson & Managing Director of The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd.) as the chairperson. The members to the advisory board consist of renowned names from the maritime fraternity.

The Conference is a special blend of speakers and topics, aptly curated to introduce various facets/area of maritime law and practice, whilst providing to the shipping professionals thoughts from international and national experts, on the key considerations that affect maritime.

Expert talk on Settlement Rights of Seafarers: Seafarers, our key workers, often lack clarity with regards to their settlement rights, much to their own and their dependent’s detriment. A review of the various issues and likely solutions for a fair and timely settlement are called for.

Panel Discussion on Challenges of a New Era in the Shipping Industry:

The Maritime world is going through massive disruptive changes which are bringing up new issues to be tackled. The Legal, regulatory, geo-political, and environment-driven challenges in Cyber Security, the Blue Economy & Digitalization, are some of the new & evolving issues, which shall be lucidly discussed by the panel as these remain of top concern to all stakeholders.

Panel Discussion on Resolve in India: As India scales up to become the 5th largest economy in the world, the business and the contracts, both international and domestic, will undergo major expansion, if not explosion, which makes it imperative for a developing India to have an International Maritime Dispute Resolution Centre. What are the challenges and what needs to be done to make India a seat of dispute resolution and arbitration shall be brainstormed to carve out a path ahead.

Commercial Claims remain one of the topmost operational concerns of a multitude of parties to a contract and dealing with them appropriately and in a timely manner is a priority at all times. The panel shall bring out the actions that need to be taken to protect legal and commercial interests, ensuring minimum damage and protection of property & reputation.
